John E

You choose a television program by choosing what you like to watch on the television.  Even though you may not like a particular showing that which is not relevant to you.  First thing that comes to mind is that you would want to see what its about to see if it would interest you to keep up with what would come up for the new series. The thoughts that you would make on a TV show is to see if its going meet your desire to stay tuned in.The videos that you choose to see might be brought up by a friend to see if you would the video.

Culture, and what it is for us (1,4,7)

Hey all, Victor here,

We all know that culture is defined as "The learned behavior of member if a given social group". So basically its saying that culture is how someone acts in a certain area of the world. However, that seems too vague. Culture should be defined as "The learned interactions of members of a given social group". This adds that culture isn't just about how one person acts, but how that person acts with other people around other people.

In addition to this, one could even add "The learned interactions and reactions of members of a given social group". This way, it can truly capture the full meaning of culture, because in culture, it isn't only one sided interaction, and nor is it simply a pre-coded answer, although the culture will influence the reaction. In culture, it is always two or more sentient beings (Humans) interacting with each other, and thus, must include the reactions of both.

Due to the unfinished definition of Culture, it causes some inhibition. With all dominant cultures, it will always be there because that is what is widely accepted as to be the proper way to interact in a social environment. This is not always a bad thing, as it allows for social uniformity and thus the ability to understand the role of another person in a social group. However, if one member of the social group challenges the standard culture, it causes distrust within the community.

This also seems to be the case with today's culture, and it has almost become a broken-record reaction, with pre-set triggers and pre-set responses. If anyone is to voice their opinion, if it goes against standard thinking, it will usually be shot down with someone saying along the lines "You shouldn't think that way, and your opinions are invalidated due to it". This is very hypocritical thinking, as is often seen with one social group being mistreated or mistrusted, and breaking off due to it, only to later mistreat or mistrust another group. An example might be when the europeans came over to the northern americas because of religious persecution. However, they began to persecute others due to the fact that they weren't of the same religious denomination as them.

However, this thinking may be caused simply due to reactions from what iI have experienced. That is one of my weaknesses as a media literate person, as I take emotion into account for validity, and thus become a hypocrite. It seems as though people are unable to allow

shifting culture and other media things

In an oral culture sentences, words, and phrases can be messed up as, in the game telephone someone can say "A big dog said a word" and it can be changed to "A big dog said 'a world'" and "A big hog said 'a pearl'" and so forth. Moving to a literate culture they can write "A big dog said a word" and it would be written again as "A big dog said a word" most likely. In an oral society meanings are lost and can't be written down. in a literate society less meaning is lost. You the reader(s) and I are literate, but how literate? literacy isn't just through reading; but through ads, TV programs, pictures ect. I can translate well with certain things like ads and symbols. Facebook is on huge media site: gaming, talking, ads, TV, movies, and other entertainment substances as such; you can get onto it through your phone, IPad, IPod, computer, kindle, and more .

Oral tradition decrease, Television choices, and Media literacy

I think that oral tradition will definitely decrease in the future because of how all stories are now being put on the internet. Right now there are some stories that are still given through oral tradition mainly stories about people's families not huge events that happened in history. Throughout the course of history oral tradition has decreased because of newspapers, computers, TV's, radios and other devices because they have been able to spread news quickly in a short period of time. I think eventually in the future though there will be no oral tradition.

_______________________________________________________________________________

The TV shows I choose are based on my hobbies and shows I can relate too. I also choose to watch TV shows if someone who as the same interests as me recommends it because then I will probably enjoy watching it. My choices are somewhat thoughtful I suppose. I usually watch videos based on the popularity of them, if I keep seeing the same video pop up in multiple places I would probably be more likely to watch it then a random one that no one has watched. I usually choose movies if they are based on the book because I like to read the book and then compare it to the movie. I also choose movies if when I watch the commercial and it seems like an interesting movie. I don't usually put a lot of thought into watching videos but with movies I think more about them.

_______________________________________________________________________________
I think that I am pretty media literate just because our generation has so much access to social media apps. My parents aren't as media literate because they grew up not having a lot of the technology today. They didn't have social media sites to be able to communicate and receive news quickly. My best friend would probably be just as media literate as I would be because we have both grown up with the same technologies. Weaknesses of being media  literate would be that you pay too much to media and don't spend your life without having media surroundings your everyday life.

Tv and Movies

I choose a television show to watch based on whats popular. If I hear in class one day that every one is talking about The Walking Dead I will watch the show in my free time and see if its good. If I decided I like it then I will get hooked and start watching it regularly. I also know certain genres that I like so I will look into movies or shows that are in the genres that I like. Some of those genres include: comedy, action, and dramas. Not all movies and TV shows that Ive seen are in those categories so of course you have to branch out and look at different options. Look at what your parents watch or the latest show your best friend just watched. I believe finding TV shows and movies is all about the word of mouth and the popularity of it.

_________________________________________________________________________________

The shift from oral to literature culture has changes tremendously! Before most of the technology from today was around we would be taught by word of mouth. Teachers had to take out books and learn it well enough to teach their students enough information that they obtain the knowledge they need. Now, we have the Internet and YouTube. The access to YouTube has change the way we learn so much because now teachers can pull up a video and it will teach us or we can read articles online. As we progress more into technology we will soon be so used to it that we will no longer depend on ourselves but the technology we use. We wont have to know anything for the computer will do it for us. Although technology is a great thing to have I believe we will become stupid and lazy.

_________________________________________________________________________________

The definition of culture in the book states that it is a learned behavior of and from members of a given social group. I believe that this is true but it needs more to it. I believe culture is about experiencing new things. That you have to go outside of what your social group is that you belong to and experience new things. I think culture also has to do with music, art, people, and things you do. Culture is based off of who you are as a person and as a group on the experiences you come across. Its based on the failures and the successes and that you can always add more to your culture. That everything you do is part of your culture.

Who were your childhood heroines/oral to literate culture/how do you choose what media you watch

My Childhood hero was Batman, I know it sounds stupid and childish but when i was growing up those were my favorite movies. When someone was in danger batman would save them or risk his life for their well being. I thought that if He could save those people he could save anyone.

_________________________________________________________________________________
With Oral culture the story would never be exactly the same. It might feel more authentic but it will change over time.  The switch to literate culture secures the story of changes that alter the original, The two types of cultures have some similarities and differences, They are similar in the fact the they still pass down traditions and pass times and beliefs. The differences are with oral tradition the story will change but it has the feeling of being more real, Literate culture is that it has been written down and saved so it wont change and can be passed down correctly for centuries to come. With the advancement of technology and people relying on tech more that literate culture will become more computer literate.

_________________________________________________________________________________
I choose what i watch by how interesting it looks or what i've heard about it. Movies like American Sniper, which just came out, interest me because they are based on true stories or books. I personally have read american sniper and would enjoy that movie because the book interested me quite a bit. Normally i choose the shows that i watch by reading the description And looking at the review, If they say its a good show i'll put little thought into it, If i haven't heard of it or the description is bad i'll put a lot of thought into it.

Choosing what to watch

I watch TV maybe 3 times a week. TV does not interest me what so ever. It is full of a bunch of crap. When I do watch TV I will watch a fishing or hunting show. I watch the news in the morning while I get ready for school in the morning. I spend all my time outdoors, I can always find something to do outside.

A-Z 1-3

Rarely do I feel inhibited by my bounded culture but in some cases I do. I feel like there are many stereotypes about people who live in Minnesota and I fit very few of them. I hate the snow, I detest the cold, and I don't enjoy "Going up North" as many people who live in Minnesota adore with every facet of their being. I never have been much of a cold type of person and often when I travel to other states or places I find people feeling as though I should love the cold and the ice when in reality I would take sunny and 75 over cloudy and -10. I also feel as though so many things in Minnesota are marketed and veered toward hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling that we often exclude many other important genres and activities that are also important but not as widely accepted as those that "Minnesotans" hold near and dear to their hearts.

I feel that prior to the events of 9/11 the United States was a very accepting and welcoming country. There wasn't much fear of others and we were all living happy and peaceful lives, for the most part. Obviously when there is a majority there is also a minority. The people that during the time were being repressed and hated against weren't heard about as much because for the most part there was a lot more love than hate. After the attacks this all changed. We, as the American public, felt as though all Muslims had attacked us on that day in 2001 and not that it was just the radical Muslims that had crashed those planes into the towers. All the love and acceptance we had before now was washed away as if a typhoon of hate and misunderstanding had swept the nation. There was so much hate and anger and people who yearned for revenge and payback for what they did to us. Still we haven't fully regained that understanding and acceptance back yet. Only time will tell if we will ever be able to forgive all Muslim people for what a small group of radicals did.

_______________________________________________________________
As a child I absolutely adored and idolized Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Gang. I have watched every episode of the original season, as well as all of the seasons and spin offs after that. The episodes put me in a trance and kept me full of wonderment and curiosity as to who was the villain and who was the good guy. As dumb as it sounds that show taught me for the first time that not everyone is the good guy and that even people who look like good guys can turn out to be the villain. I could never figure out who was the villain and when they unmasked the monster and Fred said, "Now let's see who's really behind the mask!", I would be on the edge of my seat with my face about 2 inches from the screen to see who it was. I would always be surprised and I would always be extremely upset if my older brother ruined the episode for me by telling me who the man in the mask was before I got to see it myself. Scooby-Doo was the greatest show of all time and taught children and adults alike that evil and badness is on the inside and rarely translates to outer appearances.

Childhood Heroine

Who were your child hood heroes/heroines? Why did you choose them? What cultural lessons did you learn from them?

My childhood hero was James Bond. I chose James Bond because I thought that he was cool because he could do parkour and shoot all of the bad guys with his guns and save the day. The cultural lessons I learned from them was that all British people are cool because they have a cool accent and they get to kill bad guys with guns.

How do you choose which T.V. programs you watch? How thoughtful are your choices? How do you choose videos/movies? How thoughtful are you in choosing them?

I choose my T.V. shows by listening to what my peers think about the show and/or I look online for a brief description of the show and what genre it is. My choices aren't that thoughtful. Because I usually watch an episode or two and then decide if the show is appealing to me.

Media Literacy

I believe my Media literacy is high. I consider it to be high because i understand what is happening in the world around me, only the important stuff. If you were to ask me something about a new pop star or a new singer in general I would not have any idea what your talking about. My media lit rate is high for the things that matter but to most they problem see it very very low.

joe dog's question #7,8,&9

I think that I am quite media literate on the topic of media literacy. All of my friends and family are also very media literate, because after all we live in a world surrounded by the media and it's influences. I would have to say that my biggest media weakness is making phone calls, because now a days people almost always text one another and phone calls are awkward.

____________________________________________________________________

One piece of media that a person can access from multiple points would be Instagram. Instagram can be accessed from a person's mobile device i.e. their cell phone. Instagram can also be accessed from the web through a computer. Although you can not upload from a computer onto Instagram you can still view posts others have made.

____________________________________________________________________

I choose my television programs based on what I want to watch, obviously. I am decently thoughtful with my choices. I weigh the pros and cons of different shows and choose accordingly. I choose videos and movies similarly. I watch what peaks my interest and what I want to watch at that given moment. Again I weigh the pros and cons of all my choices and pick the video/movie that I am most interested in.

Childhood hero

My childhood hero would be my Dad. He has taught me many life skills. He taught me thing I will need in the future such as fishing and hunting. Life skills that might save my life in the fire if something happened. I am glad he is not a dad that doesn't care what I do. Many kids these days go home and turn on there TV and video console and play video games all night. I refuse to play games. they are the biggest waist of time. When i walk into school everyone is whiter then a ghost, is kinda scary, even after summer break. that is why my dad is my childhood hero.

9/11 and The Views of The Muslim and American Cultures as a Result

9/11 and It's Effects

On September 11th, 2001, 8:45 AM the North Tower of the World Trade Center was struck, eighteen minutes later the South Tower was hit.  Americans were horrified during and through the aftermath of these unforgettable events. These events changed how we as Americans view ourselves and Muslims as a whole.  The American population was ready for any change necessary to prevent events like the 9/11 attacks from ever happening again.  We completely modified our entire "American Culture" in the process.  Now, nothing can ever be too safe, a prime example of this is airport security.  Americans are slowly growing used to the many restrictions put on themselves, and how to deal with them.

Before the 9/11 terror attacks, I had no clue what the Muslim culture was or what they believed in but, I knew they were bad.  Unfortunately for my small 3 year old brain I now know that I was completely and absolutely wrong. The Muslim culture is very diverse and the group that attacked the World Trade Center was a very small group of Muslim extremists which unfortunately gave the rest of the Muslim population a bad name.

Are You Media Literate?

I would say that I am media literate. I know how to view the media, although some do not. Some people believe everything that they see on things such as tabloids and TV and online. What some people do not understand about the media is that many things are exaggerated, words are minced, and somethings can be made so that they seem like a huge deal when in reality it is just a small event.

I would say that many teens today view media and do not know how to filter fiction vs. reality. If a 16 reads that a celebrity recently got into a car accident, he/she will probably believe it, but the media has taken something that was most likely a door ding and made it sound like the car was near totaled. People of an older generation I feel are better at distinguishing fact vs. fiction.

Choosing What To Watch

When I watch a movie or TV I usually watch what sounds interesting at the time. Events might influence what someone chooses to watch. Events like holidays, if it is October and Halloween is in the air, it might aspire to watch a scary movie, or if it is December and the Holidays are on everyone's mind, a Christmas movie might sound more enjoyable to me then, compared to if I were to come across the same movie in the heat of July.

Another thing is mood and emotions, Mood and emotions  can influence someone to watch a certain genre of movie or TV show, for example if someone is feeling humorous, they might want to watch a comedy movie, if someone is angry, a Action movie or a horror movie may be something that they would want to watch at the time.

Thoughtful choices and Heroes

When I choose television programs to watch, usually I'm just looking for something to play in the back ground while I'm on my phone, doing homework, or other things. I don't put much thought into it because I just want to pick something fast. I choose something that interests me, but if there's nothing good on I pick whatever seems somewhat decent. Or what I know other people like. When I choose movies or videos I put a lot more thought into that because I'm actually planning to watch it. I pick movies that I'm in the mood to watch at that time, or I search for types of movies or videos that interest me. Like crime based movies, or thrillers, something with a good storyline to keep me interested.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My childhood heroine and heroes were my brothers and my sister. I chose them because I was constantly around them and influenced by them. They took care of me often. Also they are so much older than me so I wanted to be just like them. They probably weren't my best choices of heroes and heroines growing up considering they were all teenagers or young adults. But still I admired and looked up to them. The lessons I learned from them was how to be strong, how important family is, and why we protect each other. As well as how I should act when I get older and what things I should do to eventually be successful. I got a glimpse of how my life would be like living with my family as a teenager. To this day they are my heroes, but now they are a better choice of heroes for me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Questions 2\3\4.- 911\Heroes\Changes.-

The events of 911 have caused me to look at my own culture differently, but not in a good way usually I would look on with pride but not on that day on that day we put all muslims into a box because of their religion which is a type of racism and racism is not good. and not all muslims are extremists like the terroroists.
I predict that our reassessment of american culture will come out very judge-y because we have to now take certain precautions to things we didn't before and most people do it by race.
on that day I was a baby so I didn't know about muslim culture but when I do learn about all my teachers make it very clear that all muslims are not extremists.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My childhood heroes and heroines were calvin and hobbes from the cartoon, Batman, and wonder woman and the girl from the animaniacs TV cartoon. I chose them because at the time I was little and didn't really care about movies and TV so what little I watched become what I thought about and what I imagined about when I was playing outside.
and calvin and Hobbes isn't a TV show they were a cartoon strip that my mom had big books of so I fell in love with the characters and I still like reading them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that I liked oral culture better than I like the computerized and very tech based cultures because I like the idea of hearing the old folk stories of your town or family and I like the fact the the only way to keep it in this world is to hear it and remember it and stay with it and not forget.
but now that our culture keeps moving on to the computer age I feel like we are losing our sense of pride in our stories because they are becoming public, I feel like the computer age is very invasive and not of our best interest.

Interpreting Media

I feel I can take a piece of media and explain how to approach it because I understand that media can be bias or directed to a certain or particular audience. Knowing this I can look at the information with a different perspective and incorporate critical thinking to understand the point that is being presented to me so that I may look up different sources of the topic and get a more full understanding and appreciation for it. One example is if you see something that interest you on the news and later look it up on the internet to find a different article that seems to be much different from how you heard it on the news and use both the article and the news source to verify the information that you are looking at from multiple access points.

Question 9 tv movies

How do you choose which tv programs you watch? When I watch a tv show I usually prefer a tv program that is funny and has action in it. I also usually watch alot of the same tv shows that my friends watch. How thoughtful are you choices? When im choosing a tv program im not very picky if I like the tv show then I just watch it.How do I choose movies. When I choose a movie its usually the same as picking a tv show Il like to watch movies that have comedy and action in them. I dont like romantic movies and I dont like movies with alot of drama in them. How thoughtful are you when you pick a movie? When choosing a movie I usually just see the ones my friends want to see because i dont care that much about what kind of movie I watch as long as its not a romantic movie.

Choose which Television Programs You Watch, Videos and Movies you Watch

The way I choose television programs is by going through and seeing what I like best.  The first program I like to watch is sports.  The second program i like to watch is NCIS which stands for (Naval Criminal Investigation Service.)  The reason why chose those was because i like to watch action shows, movies, and videos.  Sports is just entertaining when you are bored and have nothing else to do.  The movies i watch are Action type because they do a lot of fighting and you can maybe learn something from watching them.  My favorite videos i watch are probably like How To videos for a lot of different reasons.  The main reason I watch them are because i like to figure out how to do certain things for the games i play.

-Treyton Harmer-

Interpreting Media Messages

I think that any piece of media can have multiple meanings, or layers, if you will. For example, I could go and read an article about some major event that just happened. Then I could hand off that same article to Treyton or Tyler, and they might have a completely different thought on it.

So say I have been in a plane accident and survived(I haven't actually, but just bear with me), and Tyler has never been. Then if I go and read an article about a plane crashing and having very few survivors, I would have a connection to those poor people. Tyler might still feel horrible about the accident, but he might never know the true horrors of being in this situation.

How media Literate am I?

I think I am fairly media literate. I know about most things in the media, what is going on in the world, I know my beliefs and how I view what is happening, and I have an argument for the things I strongly believe in.

How Media Literate I am.

I believe I am very literate in forms of media because I am surrounded by it on a daily basis whether on the internet, seeing an article on a page of newspaper or magazine lying around somewhere in the house by a family member. I spend a lot of my free time on the internet reading about new sciences and inventions because they interest me, doing this for such a vast amount of my free time allows me to understand the diverse forms of media. I see things such as videos and articles from a vast array of sources.
The articles I read are interesting because most of the time I see a similar article from a different persons perspective and when I read both I can see how the information and word choice changes. This can be about something like a t.v show being cancelled and some people would be alright with it, some happy about it, and even some outraged. It allows me to put my own opinion into play to avoid bias  overruling facts.

childhood heros

One of my biggest childhood heros was ray lewis. Ever since I was in 5th grade I looked up to him and thought that someday I could be just like him. I played the same position as he did in football and he was always an inspiration to me because he was a  cool guy and loved attention just like I did. Still to this day even though he doesn't play anymore I would still look up to him. He loves to get his team pumped up for games and I love to pump my team up before games as well. I just think that I play harder than I would if I wasnt

Question 3 heroes

Who were your childhood heroes. My childhood hero was Batman because he was the only one without superpowers he was just a normal guy in a suit who made billions of dollars. And one of the main reasons why he was my childhood hero was because he had the coolest looking costume and he had the coolest gadgets. He was also the most inspiring because he showed that you dont need superpowers to be a hero. For example a policeman, firefighter, military, marines. Some cultural; lessons i learned from him was you dont need superpowers and that anyone can be a hero and also he taught me to help people who are in need of help.

Heroes and Heroines

I have never really had any personal heroes or heroines because nobody ever really interested me much. I just wanted to be my own person so I never tried to be like anyone else. So because of this I never really learned any cultural lessons.

Loretta

Definition of Culture

I think that culture is the customs of how we live our lives. Different things can influence our culture, events can change our culture, for example without such inventions such as live broadcasted television citizens would have to wait until a certain bit of information had reached their area, where as with live broadcasting, an event that is happening in New York City can be viewed at the exact same time in Chicago as in the place where the event is taking place (NYC).

I would have to say that culture evolves over time, I would say this because some actions of the past for instance, hanging a criminal may have been an accepted form of punishment in the days of our founding fathers, but such acts would not be socially accepted in today's culture.

Choosing programs to watch

9.) I choose programs that I enjoy. Because I don't have a lot of time for watching television I choose what I watch carefully. If I find my self bored when watching something I just find something different. The things that I find more interesting to watch are shows that make me laugh or put me in a better mood. I enjoy funny TV shows. Currently one of my favorite shows is The Office. I enjoy it because it is funny and keeps me entertained.

Childhood Heroes and Heroines

My childhood heroes and heroines include a very long list. At the top of the list are probably Bob the Builder and Dora the Explorer. These were my two favorite cartoons as a young child. I really enjoyed Bob the Builder because I love to build and/or take things apart. For example, one time when I was at my grandparents house, I took all of their doorknobs off of all of their door in the whole house. My grandpa wasn't the happiest about this, but now we look back on it and laugh. I really liked Dora because she helped me learn how to count to ten in spanish.

I think that these two shows contributed to my personality in some ways too. For example, I still love anything that moves, and I have to figure out how it works. To do this I usually take that thing apart. Dora has contributed to my person in the way that I like spanish. Without her basic lessons every Saturday morning I would have never known the spanish numbers for my seventh grade spanish classes. In conclusion, these two cartoons have contributed much to my life, and I am grateful for it.

-Leo Grotte-

Programs that I watch

The way that I choose the television programs that I watch is really simple, I don't. What I do is just flip through channels and if I see something that I might like I watch it. This is how I got hooked on a lot of the TV shows that I watch now. I don't really give my choices much thought. If it looks interesting I just watch it. For videos it's the same thing but a lot of the time I watch fan-made videos that are based off of the shows that I watch. For movie I just read the little summary of the movie on the back and if it sound interesting I watch it. So long story short, I am a channel surfer.

Loretta Nye

Childhood Heroes and Heroines

My favorite childhood heroes are Teenage Mutan Ninja Turtles.  The original series i watched all the time because it was about helping people.  My favorite turtle was the one with the blue mask named Leonardo which he fought with two swords.  It really encouraged me to help other people, get rid of the guy who wasn't nice and just be a friendly person.  A lesson i learned is to just be yourself.  No matter who you are you should always help your friends out if they need you.

what tv programs to watch

I think that people watch what they watch on tv because of what most of the people around us watch and what our peirs watch. I also think that we watch what we watch because of what our culture watches and what we were raised into when we were kids. Another big factor is what our parents influance on us. Like for example if you have more childish parents then you will have more of a funny charteristic. But most of all I think that it would be more of what our culture and what our peirs around us watch because we want to be like them.

Critiquing the Definition of Culture

I feel the definition of culture in this book doesn't take into account all present factors, such as how someone is raised and their family life or the religion of their family. It also doesn't seem to take into account that everyone has different experiences and reactions to certain occurrences. Say someone went to Valley Fair and doesn't like roller coasters they might have a different perspective of the event and might give a negative review if someone asks their opinion then changing that persons opinion based off the information they have it would be necessary to make ones own conclusion as to not make it entirely bias.

Media Literacy

This is our class blog about all things media. We will apply concepts from our discussions on the media to our own lives in this space. We will also think critically about situations that occur in the media.
